William Roberts II, better known as Rick Ross (stylized as Rick Ro$$) is an American rapper from Miami, Florida. The name comes from the notorious drug trafficker Ricky Ross.
Ross was born on 28th January 1976 and was signed to Suave House Recordings in 2002. A few years later the rapper moved to Slip-n-Slide Records, part of the Def Jam label. His first appearances were on the label’s own rap albums, but he gained prominence after touring with fellow hip hop artist Trick Daddy in 2005 and soon entered the studio to record his debut rap album.
Port of Miami – a reference to the fact that Miami is a common entry point for cocaine shipments to America – was released in August 2006 and was an instant success. It shot straight to number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, sold over 187,000 copies in its first week alone and was soon certified gold in the US. The album’s lead single Hustlin’ became a huge summer anthem, while the follow up single Push It was also a big hit.
Ross followed this success with his 2008 album Trilla. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced three singles: Speedin’ (ft. R. Kelly), Here I Am (ft. Nelly and Avery Storm) and the Top 20 hit The Boss (ft. T-Pain) His next studio album, 2009’s Deeper Than Rap, became his third to hit the number one spot in the US, selling over 150,000 copies in its first week alone. It produced three hit singles: Magnificent (ft. John Legend), Usual Suspects (ft. Nas and Kevin Cossom) and All I Really Want (ft. The-Dream).
Ross’ fourth album, Teflon Don, is set to be released in July 2010. The first single from the album, Super High (ft. Ne-Yo), was released on 4th May.
