Eminem’s Recovery marks six weeks as UK number one

by SimpleT on Aug.23, 2010, under Eminem

It’s official – Eminem’s latest album Recovery is his most successful ever in the UK, having just celebrated its sixth non-consecutive week on the top spot. It first appeared at the summit of the UK Albums Chart on Sunday 27th June and stayed there for two weeks before being pipped by Kylie Minogue’s Aphrodite. However, it soon rallied again and spent a further three weeks at the top before dropping to second after Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. Then, on 15th August 2010, it triumphantly returned to number one.

The six week reign makes the album Eminem’s longest-running UK number one ever, ahead of 2002’s The Eminem Show and 2005’s Curtain Call – The Hits, which both spent five weeks at the top of the UK Albums Chart. Recovery, which is also Eminem’s seventh UK number one album, has also produced two US Billboard Hot 100 number one hit singles: Not Afraid and Love the Way You Lie (ft. Rihanna). All in all, 2010 has been a very good year so far for Eminem.

Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, is an eleven-time Grammy Award-winning rapper, singer and record producer from Missouri, USA.

Born 17th October 1972, Eminem first came to prominence with the release of his 1999 debut album The Slim Shady LP. Now recognized as a hip hop classic, the record featured the hit songs My Name Is, Guilty Conscience and Just Don’t Give a Fuck, sold over six million copies worldwide and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

He followed this success with The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000, which sold 1.8 million copies in its first week in the US – making it the fastest selling solo album in history – and spawned smash hits The Real Slim Shady, The Way I Am and Stan. The record eventually shipped over 19 million copies.

Eminem’s third album The Eminem Show was the bestselling record of 2002. It included the tunes Without Me, Cleanin’ Out My Closet and Sing For The Moment and made Eminem the only artist in history to have won Best Rap Album Grammys for three consecutive albums. Later the same year he also released the number one single Lose Yourself from the soundtrack to his debut film 8 Mile.

In 2004, Eminem released his fourth album Encore, which sold over eleven million copies worldwide within nine months, produced the hits Just Lose It, Like Toy Soldiers and Mockingbird and was again nominated for (though did not win) a Best Rap Album Grammy.

After a five year hiatus, Eminem released Relapse in 2009, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles We Made You, Crack a Bottle and Beautiful. This album, along with his other three during the 2000s, helped him to become the biggest-selling artist of the decade with over 80 million record sales.

Eminem’s seventh album Recovery was released in June 2010 and scored the number one hit single Not Afraid.
